Our work is wide-ranging and evolves to meet the needs of children and families whose lives are dramatically shaped by our country’s constantly shifting immigration policies.

Families and children who come to the United States from Central America are seeking refuge from life-threatening violence and an inability to access any protection in their home countries. They come to escape domestic abuse, rape, human trafficking, drug peddling, and violent gangs who haunt their streets and school corridors. They endure harrowing journeys, trusting they will find safety.

Some parents make an excruciating choice no parent should have to make: to protect their children from life-threatening conditions by sending them on their own to the Unites States.  Parents endure the trauma of separation by holding to the trust that, once their children cross the border, they will be safe and secure at last.  Instead, the U.S. government puts them into freezing cages, forces them into institutional detention, and fails to release them to family and sponsors who offer homes, nurturance, love, and all of the tools to allow them to grow and develop into healthy adults. The resulting trauma for these children can last a lifetime.

The atrocities being inflicted on young children are committed by our government, in our name, and on our watch. We cannot look away. We cannot allow this to happen anymore. Together, we can build a nation of which we can all be proud: one that welcomes and protects vulnerable, victimized children. It’s up to us to demand better policies that protect Each Step Home

A special thanks to our wonderful partners – the ACLU, the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law, Children’s Defense Fund, Miles4Migrants, and the Women’s Refugee Commission – as well as our hundreds of dedicated volunteers. We could not do our work without their dedication and support.
